Why Nature-Based and Alternative Therapies Are Changing the Game

When you think of therapy, what comes to mind? Traditionally the image many people think of is an office with 4 walls, a couch and a small artwork on the wall.

And while traditional therapy settings absolutely work for some people, others don’t feel so at home there, which can make it difficult to really connect and reap the benefits of the session.

If this sounds like you, your child or a loved one, you’re definitely not alone! Many people thrive in a space that feels open, immersive and connected to nature – and this is where nature-based and alternative therapies come in.

Here at Beyond The Paddock, we offer therapy that goes beyond 4 walls, offering a setting on the New South Wales Central Coast that is grounded in nature, refreshing and expansive. Whether you’re participating in an Equine-Assisted Therapy session, hanging out with our friendly farm animals or simply just speaking with one of our experienced counsellors while taking in the fresh air, we have a range of options that allow you to experience therapy in a way that feels natural, comfortable and engaging.

What Is Nature-Based Therapy?

Funnily enough, nature-based therapy is exactly what it sounds like – therapy sessions based in nature, or more specifically, set at Beyond The Paddock on over 11 acres of private property in beautiful Jilliby, on the NSW Central Coast.

Nature-based therapy can include:

  • Animal-Assisted Therapy: Such as our horse, dog or farm animal sessions guided by our highly trained Allied Health professionals.
  • Outdoor Counselling: Bringing traditional therapy into a peaceful, open setting.
  • Sensory and Movement-Based Therapy: Engaging with the natural environment to build motor skills, mindfulness and confidence.
  • Gardening and Nature Immersion: Connecting with plants, animals and the land to encourage healing, self-awareness and presence.

The ultimate goal is to ensure therapy feels more accessible, enjoyable and effective for those people who may not resonate as much with the traditional, clinical settings.

The Power of Nature in Therapy:

Research shows that spending time in nature can lower stress, reduce anxiety and improve overall well-being. Have you ever taken a walk through the park on a sunny morning and realised you feel amazing afterwards? That’s the power of nature!

Many participants who engage in nature-based therapy find it easier to open up, process emotions and feel at ease while being guided by their therapist. Here’s why nature and therapy make such a perfect pair:

  • They Encourage Relaxation and Mindfulness: Being outdoors naturally fosters relaxation, mindfulness, and the ability to take notice of your surroundings – from the birds chirping to the wind rustling through the trees can really take you away from the hustle and bustle of the world, and into a deep presence with yourself.
  • Provides a Multi-Sensory Experience: Unlike the traditional experience of sitting in an office, participating in a nature-based therapy session engages all the senses at once. This can really enhance the experience, helping the participant to feel more connected with the practice.
  • Offers a Less Formal Setting: For many, the clinical setting of therapy can feel daunting and intimidating, with many people feeling more comfortable being in a place that feels natural and approachable.
  • Supports Physical Movement: Nature-based therapy often incorporates physical activity – whether it be walking around the property, hanging out with animals or participating in hands-on tasks during the session. This can be incredibly helpful when processing emotions and working through trauma or healing.

Who Can Benefit From Nature-Based Therapy?

Nature-based therapy is approachable and accessible for people from all different backgrounds, ages and therapeutic needs. Some people who may particularly benefit from this type of setting include:

  • People who feel uncomfortable in traditional, clinical therapy settings
  • Neurodivergent individuals who thrive in sensory-rich environments
  • Children and adults working on motor skills, emotional regulation or trauma recovery
  • Anyone looking for a more holistic and engaging therapy experience

While our animal-based therapy plays a huge role in what we offer here at Beyond The Paddock, we are also aware that not everybody is interested in engaging with our animals, and may want to come to us just for the environment itself.

We believe that therapy should meet you where you’re at, so whether it’s working with animals, or simply just enjoying the peace of our natural surroundings, we’re here to support your journey in a way that feels right to you. If you’re curious to find out more about our nature-based and alternative therapies, we’d love to chat!
